Tests
Kyu-6 to Kyu-1 tests are held regularly at the dojo, serving several purposes.
The first purpose is for the student to have an opportunity to be evaluated for the work she or he has done. Students prepare for the test by working on a series of pre-defined techniques, and they present their work, with the aid of fellow students, on the day of the test. After the test, the students receive the teacher's remarks.
There are no color belts to show rank in Aikido. This illustrates the meaning of these tests - an opportunity for the student to see in a clear way what they know and don't know, as well as to get a more formal feedback on their Aikido.
The second reason for having these tests is for the teacher of the dojo. The teacher can see in a clear way the 'fruit' of his teaching. If something is wrong or misunderstood, it is an opportunity for the teacher to know what he needs to work on in his teaching, and perhaps in his own Aikido.
